Unexplained Absences

It is a known fact around the world in education institutions that students with high absenteeism are less likely to succeed in their learning. Please make sure any time your child is not at school, even for one period, you email an explanation for the absence to absences@orewacollege.nz or use the Orewa College APP.

Attendance records can be viewed by students and their caregivers on the web portal (there is a two day delay in showing attendance so audits can be performed on rolls). Please ask your child to follow up with their teacher if there are any errors.

For Year 11, 12 or 13 students we have replaced the automatic Principal’s Detention for unexplained absences (considered truancy after communications to student and home still do not explain the absence) and will record each instance of truancy.

When opportunities arise, eligibility for them will take into consideration their truancy record. Some of the activities where this will be considered are; School Ball, School Trips (including course trips), Sports, Performances e.g. Dance Festivals, Stage Challenge, Leadership Opportunities, Tournament Week, Selecting Courses, Duke of Edinburgh, Camps, STAR Courses (eg Barista, Dive, Tourism), Gateway, Senior Graduation.

Parents & caregivers will be emailed when there is any unexplained absence, even if it is for one period.
