Social Sciences

In the social sciences, students explore how societies work and how they themselves can participate and take action as critical, informed and responsible citizens.

Middle School (Years 7 & 8)

Year 7 Year 8

Our Year 7 Social Studies programme is the focus of Terms 1&4, alternating with Science.

Social Studies encourages students to investigate their own backgrounds and the world around them. This allows students a great deal of opportunity to practice their Key Competencies.

Term 1 “Pass It On” - personal and family histories, culture and tradition

Term 4 “Tourism” – reasons people travel, tourism attractions and facilities

Our Year 8 Social Studies programme is the focus for Term 2 and is integrated with our Science topic in Term 3 & 4.

Social Studies encourages students to investigate their own backgrounds and the world around them. This allows students a great deal of opportunity to practice their Key Competencies.

Term 2 Pasifika - students study a Pasifika culture of their choice culminating with a performance for a Matariki festival at the end of the term. Visit to Te Hana marae; marae protocol and tikanga.

Term 3 & 4 “Earth’s fury” , looking at how communities act in response to environmental phenomena. This unit is integrated with Science.

Finanial Literature

Financial Literacy can be defined as the ability to make informed judgments and to make effective decisions regarding the use and management of money throughout your life.

Geography
This is a half year course looking at both physical (natural) and cultural (human) aspects of Geography.
History

This is a 2 term course. Students will develop knowledge, skills and key competencies for senior History courses.

Business Accounting
Half year course. Gain an understanding of basis accounting terms and concepts.
Business Enterprise
Half year course. Students will gain an understanding into why and how individuals, businesses and communities make business and economic decisions
