In English, students study, use, and enjoy language and literature communicated orally, visually, or through writing.

Middle School (Years 7 & 8)

Our Year 7 English programme focuses on reading comprehension, foundation writing skills and making rich language choices in writing. Reading Plus is one of our key reading tools, and our Reading Mileage Programme offers support from those requiring regular reading practice.

Term 1 Finding information; language features; poetry; personal introductions

Term 2 Reorganising & inference; language features; writing paragraphs; formal speeches

Term 3 Describing characters & settings; novel studies; narrative writing

Term 4 Advertising; language of persuasion; writing procedures

The year 8 literacy programme focuses on;

Reading; inferencing, comprehending and analyzing. Reading Plus is one of our key reading tools, and our Reading Mileage Programme offers support from those requiring regular reading practice.

Writing including writing for a variety of purposes; poetry, speeches, narrative and report writing. Where possible the writing programme is integrated with relevant topic studies.

Spelling You can spell programme, Spelling Bee

Te Reo Maori including pepeha, mihimihi and basic Maori kupu.

Extension programmes such as Lit Quiz and writing competitions are encouraged for more able and enthusiastic readers and writers. Film studies in term 3 is a very popular topic; all films are entered in the MADE awards national competition.

Middle School (Years 9 & 10)

The English course will enable students to select and read text, understand connections, integrate sources and use strategies. Students will make meaning of ideas or information they receive through listening, reading and view. They will learn to create meaning through speaking, writing and presenting their work.

Senior School (Years 11 - 13)
