At Orewa College, we ignite curiosity and deepen understanding by exploring how science explains the world around us

Science at Orewa College is about curiosity, discovery, and making sense of the world we live in. From Year 7 through to Year 13, students learn to ask questions, investigate evidence, and apply scientific thinking to real-world contexts.

Science learning at Orewa College

Discovering understanding and possibility through science

Our Science programme encourages students to explore, investigate, and think critically across Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science, and Environmental Science. Learning is hands-on and collaborative, with practical experiments, fieldwork, and the use of modern technologies to deepen understanding.

Across all year levels, students develop scientific literacy and key competencies that prepare them for NCEA, further study, and informed participation in an increasingly science-driven world.

Years 7 and 8

Building curiosity and foundational science skills

In Years 7 and 8, students build strong foundations in scientific knowledge and skills through engaging, hands-on learning. Science is taught through inquiry, experimentation, and real-world contexts that encourage curiosity and active participation.

Year 7 Science is taught in Terms 2 and 3, alternating with Social Studies. Students develop core skills such as scientific inquiry, fair testing, and observation before exploring high-interest topics through independent inquiry.

In Year 8, students continue to build their understanding of the Living World and Earth systems, with learning that emphasises key competencies, social action, and connections to their environment and community.

Years 9 and 10

Exploring the natural world through investigation and experimentation

Science in Years 9 and 10 is practical, engaging, and designed to deepen students’ understanding of how the world works. Students investigate biological systems, chemical reactions, physical forces, Earth processes, and space science through experiments, modelling, and digital tools.

Year 9 Science is a semester-long course that introduces key concepts and skills through hands-on learning, while Year 10 Science is a full-year course that builds confidence and prepares students for NCEA. Throughout these years, students are encouraged to question, analyse, and apply scientific ideas to real-life situations.

Years 11 to 13

Pathways for NCEA success specialisation and future study

Senior Science at Orewa College offers a range of pathways to meet diverse interests, strengths, and future goals. At Level 1, students can choose General Science courses with different subject focuses, allowing them to explore Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Earth and Space Science in meaningful, real-world contexts.

At Levels 2 and 3, students can specialise in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Earth and Space Science. Courses are designed to prepare students for NCEA achievement, further study, apprenticeships, and science-related careers.

Scholarship opportunities are available in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics for highly motivated students in Year 13.
