At Orewa College, we empower students to explore pathways and confidently shape their future.
Our Careers team works alongside students and families to explore opportunities beyond school. Through personalised guidance and practical programmes, we support successful transitions into employment, training, and further study.
Careers Hub and Conversations
Guidance for future pathways
Our Careers Hub supports students to think proactively about life beyond school and to take advantage of the many opportunities available to them. We endeavour to hold a Career Conversation with every Year 12 student to explore future possibilities and support informed decisions about subjects, courses, and pathways. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend these discussions, and Year 13 students can book an appointment through the Careers Google Classroom or by visiting the Careers Hub. Students are also encouraged to visit the Careers Hub during morning tea for guidance and assistance with course selection and planning.
Gateway
Structured workplace learning
Gateway provides Year 12 and Year 13 students with opportunities for structured workplace learning through off-site placements. Students gain practical knowledge and skills related to their chosen industry while working towards assessment standards. Students are required to apply to become a Gateway student, and an application form link will be made available during course selection.
STAR
Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource
The STAR programme supports Year 11 to Year 13 students to move smoothly from school into tertiary study or work. These short, practical programmes allow senior students to explore potential career paths, gain hands-on experience, and experience tertiary-style learning in an engaging environment. STAR holiday courses are offered during term breaks as an introduction to courses provided by tertiary education providers and private training establishments.
Benefits of participating in STAR and Gateway courses:
- Explore career paths and discover interests.
- Gain practical, hands-on skills for future study or employment.
- Experience tertiary study before leaving school.
- Meet like-minded students and build networks.
STAR courses are advertised through the student daily notices each term when registrations open. Spaces are limited and students need to register promptly. Dates for STAR courses are available through the Careers Google Classroom, and students can visit the Careers Hub to enquire about available opportunities. Year 10 students have the opportunity to participate in a one-day STAR taster course in Term 4 during Year 10 Career Tasters Week.
