At Orewa College, we support students to explore scholarships early and apply with confidence.
Scholarships are offered by universities, companies, and private organisations to students from all over New Zealand. They can help finance a student’s educational journey, including course costs, living costs, and food costs, and can reduce the value of an individual’s student loan.
Scholarship information
Understand what scholarships can offer and how applications are managed
Scholarships recognise academic excellence and potential and provide talented students with the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills.
A scholarship award allows students to take up new challenges and experiences which may not otherwise be available. All scholarships are processed through the Careers Department.
There are hundreds of scholarships available every year to Year 13 students. Provided you are eligible, you are in with a chance of being awarded one.
Scholarships are competitive, have limited numbers, and follow strict deadlines. To have the best chance of success, it is crucial you get onto them early. School holidays are an ideal time to look and apply for scholarships, as you do not have the distractions that come with term time.
Orewa College Allan William Shaw Scholarships
Learn about scholarships established to support Orewa College students into tertiary study
Mr Allan Shaw was passionate about education and established this trust to make tertiary education a possibility for students from Orewa College. He was an Hibiscus Coast resident who left Orewa College students a generous provision for scholarships. These are administered by the Public Trust.
Applications open in early July and close approximately seven weeks later in August. Scholarships are awarded for the following year. Successful applicants are notified of outcomes at the Year 13 Graduation. The link for the current year, when it is made available for us, is updated on the CareerWise Website.
More information can be accessed through the Careers Hub website.
Scholarship references
Follow the steps to request a reference in time for your application
A scholarship reference is often required when applying for a scholarship. A scholarship reference is usually more targeted and provides more specific information. Your referee, the person who writes your reference, needs about 10 days to write a reference for you, so start early.
How do I get a scholarship reference:
- Collect a Scholarship Reference Application Form from the Careers Department or print it from the Year 13 Careers Google Classroom.
- Make sure you complete the application well and that it has all the required information.
- Students then hand this application form to Careers, who will send all required information to the identified person to write the reference, for example a Head of Department, Dean, teacher, or Head of Department Careers.
It is the student’s responsibility to maintain contact with their referee to ensure their reference is provided on time.
