A creative video by Year 8 teacher Ralph Zamora introduced the Year 8 team at Meet the Teacher Evening, setting a welcoming tone for parents and whānau.
Stranger Things-inspired introduction becomes a familiar start to the Year 8 journey
Parents attending this year’s Meet the Teacher Evening were welcomed with a creative video introduction that helped set the tone for the year ahead for Year 8 students and their whānau.
The short video, created by Year 8 teacher Ralph Zamora, introduced the “Year 8 Things” showcase and highlighted the Year 8 teaching team in a playful and recognisable format. Inspired by the opening sequence of the Netflix series Stranger Things, the video used familiar visuals and music to capture attention and create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for parents as they arrived.
The creative approach acted as a light-hearted hook, helping parents feel at ease while learning more about the teachers who will be supporting their children throughout the year. By blending humour with clear introductions, the video reinforced the importance of early connection between teachers and whānau.
Now an established annual tradition, the “Year 8 Things” video reflects the effort made by teachers and students to build strong relationships at the beginning of the school year. It also provides a shared reference point that many families recognise and enjoy returning to.
The video has since been shared on Orewa College social media channels, where it has received a positive response from the wider school community.
