Strong Showing for Our Kura at Ngā Manu Kōrero 2025

Maria Walker-Kinnell and Shanaye Everleigh represent Orewa College at Ngā Manu Kōrero 2025, with Maria placing 3rd equal.

Maria and Shanaye impress judges with powerful speeches celebrating Māori voices

Two of our talented ākonga took the stage at this year’s Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competition, representing Orewa College with pride and passion.

Maria Walker-Kinnell delivered a compelling speech on the enduring power of poetry in Māori oratory, also impressing in the impromptu section. Shanaye Everleigh paid tribute to the often-overlooked legacy of Miri Te Tai, a pioneering Māori suffragette. Both spoke with confidence, clarity and real mana, holding the attention of the entire audience.

The judges were clearly moved. Maria placed 3rd equal,  an outstanding result in a strong field. Shanaye showed the kind of presence that marks her as one to watch in the future.

A big thank you to Mr Koziarski for his steady support throughout the event.
