Matariki Fia Fia 2025: Kapa Haka Lights the Way at Orewa College

Orewa College celebrated Matariki with Whangaparāoa College and Mahurangi College through performance, remembrance, and whanaungatanga.

Orewa College’s kapa haka led a powerful afternoon of remembrance and aspiration, filling the OAEC with aroha and whanaungatanga.

The Orewa Arts and Events Centre was overflowing with aroha on Thursday 19 June as our kura came together for the 2025 Matariki celebration.

Orewa College proudly welcomed Whangaparāoa College and Mahurangi College for a powerful Matariki Fia Fia. The shared kaupapa of embracing diversity and celebrating together came to life not just through kapa haka and deep moments of remembrance but in the spirit of hosting our fellow kura and standing shoulder to shoulder as a wider community.

With every seat filled and standing room only, the atmosphere inside the OAEC was both electric and emotional. Captured beautifully by Media Squad leader Megan Postlewaight, our kapa haka group led the way with a performance steeped in mana and grounded in tikanga.

Later, as the audience stood together for the poroporoaki ki ngā mate, the hall fell silent in honour of those who have passed. It was the heart of the celebration.

“Matariki is a time for second chances,” said Principal Wiri Warriner, reflecting on the star Hiwa-i-te-rangi. “It’s about aspirations, hope, and stepping forward together. My Nan never saw me become principal, but I know she would be proud.”

It was a moment to reflect not only on those who came before us, but on the path we’re creating together.

Grandmother Mo Bostock, speaking after the celebration, captured what many felt: “My heart is full. May you all come together with love and remember those who have gone before us.”

From the first call of the pōwhiri to the final karakia, the Matariki Fia Fia felt like home, anchored in aroha, carried by community, and lit by the stars.
