Il’ya Allen selected for 2025 National Youth Jazz Big Band
Orewa College is proud to celebrate the selection of Il’ya Allen to the inaugural 2025 National Youth Jazz Big Band, a prestigious ensemble showcasing the very best of young jazz talent across Aotearoa.
Il’ya was one of just 19 students selected from 25 schools nationwide, following a competitive audition process held at the Wright Family Foundation National Youth Jazz Competition in Tauranga. His inclusion in the group reflects his exceptional musical ability and dedication.
This new national initiative brings together outstanding secondary school musicians from across the country. With only 13 schools represented, Il’ya’s selection is a significant honour for Orewa Colleg. He plays Trumpet 5 in the band, joining other top young musicians in a performance that was live-streamed to audiences across the motu.
The National Youth Jazz Big Band was established in 2025 to elevate and connect young jazz musicians across New Zealand. It provides a valuable platform for students to develop their skills, collaborate with peers, and share their talents on a national stage.
Ngā mihi nui, Il’ya. We’re proud to see you lead the way in jazz and represent Orewa College at this level.
