Riding the Wave: Surf Lifesaving Success for OC Students

Orewa College surf athletes have had a standout summer season, representing our community at major surf lifesaving events across Aotearoa. From pre-dawn trainings to national podium finishes, these students have shown exceptional commitment both in and out of the water.

At the Northern Region Championships, Charlie White and Eli Martin Dean took home gold in the Board Relay while Isla Thompson won silver in the U13 Beach Sprint.

Despite missing the Oceans event this year due to scheduling conflicts, Hudson proudly brought home three Silver medals at Northern Regions—in the Individual Swim, Individual Diamond, and Relay Diamond—finishing just two metres behind the eventual multiple gold medalist at Oceans. He is excited to return next season and aim to add even more to the medal tally.

At the Oceans Junior National Festival of Surf in Mount Maunganui, the juniors showed impressive sportsmanship throughout the competition:

  • Eli Martin Dean

  • Charlie White

  • Otis Cox

  • Piri Pihema

  • Poppy Harrod

  • Macy Martin Dean

  • Alex Smith

  • Kitty Cox

  • Isla Thompson

“All embraced the camaraderie, challenge, and respect for the ocean that comes with this sport,” said Parent Davina Dean. As the surf season wraps up, many of these athletes will continue their training and involvement with local surf clubs, aiming for even greater success next year.
