Training for Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions Begins at Orewa College

Discover the Duke of Edinburgh (DOE) programme at Orewa College! From hands-on outdoor training to an upcoming expedition to Nepal in 2026, students develop leadership, teamwork, and resilience through adventure.

Adventure Awaits: Orewa College DOE Training Day!

Orewa College recently welcomed 80 new members to our Duke of Edinburgh (DOE) whānau with an action-packed training day! Students put their outdoor skills to the test, setting up tents, cooking on primuses, building bivouacs, and even tackling river crossings in the estuary.

Hands-On Learning & Leadership

  • Outdoor skills: Students learned essential survival skills, preparing them for future expeditions, including an expedition to Nepal in 2026..

  • Leadership in action: 15 senior “Dukies” stepped up to guide their younger peers.

  • Teamwork & resilience: The day was a true display of manaaki, with students supporting and encouraging one another.

"It was awesome to see everyone working together and embracing the challenge," said Bruce, our Teacher in Charge of Duke of Edinburgh.

Looking Ahead: Nepal Expedition 2026

In October 2026, 20 of our Year 12 and 13 Silver and Gold DOE students will embark on a life-changing journey to Nepal.

The group will:

  • Travel to the Solu Khumbu region near Mount Everest.

  • Take on a service project at a Himalayan Trust school.

  • Trek through the breathtaking mountain landscapes.

  • Immerse themselves in the local culture and environment.
