Level 2 Biology students investigate the Ōrewa Beach ecosystem, collecting field data and applying ecological concepts through hands-on learning.
Field investigation brings ecological concepts to life through local study
Level 2 Biology students carried out a field investigation at Ōrewa Beach, collecting ecological data across the rocky shore using quadrats and transect lines.
Working in groups, students recorded patterns of species distribution from the high tide mark to the water’s edge, observing how environmental factors such as wave action and exposure influence where organisms live. The fieldwork included navigating shallow crossings and exploring rock pools, where students encountered a wide range of marine life.
Back in the classroom, students have continued the investigation by analysing drone footage, examining mussels and barnacles, and observing filter-feeding processes. Using their own data, they are now applying ecological concepts and evaluating the health of the local marine environment.
The experience connects classroom learning with the local coastline, giving students a practical understanding of ecology in their own community.
