Dance Students Refine Competition Choreography in Intensive Weekend Workshops

More than 50 Orewa College students trained in hip hop workshops with Travis Lightband and Lilly Wilson to prepare OsmiC and OutCast for competition.

Last weekend, more than 50 Orewa College students in Years 8 to 13 took part in an intensive series of hip hop workshops, spending approximately 15 hours developing choreography for the college’s mega crews, OsmiC and OutCast.

Led by choreographers Travis Lightband and Lilly Wilson, the workshops provided dedicated time for students to refine their competition sequences. Working closely with their choreographers, ākonga focused on timing, formations, and overall performance cohesion as they prepared for the upcoming competition season.

The weekend also created space for connection across year levels, with junior and senior dancers training side by side. Year 12 student Sian Thomas reflected on the experience, saying it was about “reconnecting with old friends and making new friends through our shared love of Dance.”

The workshops mark an important step in the preparation process for OsmiC and OutCast, as both crews continue building their performance standard and strengthening their team dynamic ahead of competition.
