Year 13 student Alyssa reflects on the impact of Manukura Camp and how it strengthened leadership and connection among student leaders.
When I got back, I was met with people asking me, “How was Manukura Camp?” Words can’t fully capture the experience. It’s the kind of experience that sits in your chest long after it’s over.
It reminded me of the memories from the film Inside Out, one of those glowing core memories you don’t realise is being created until you look back and feel it all over again. That’s what this camp was for me, a moment that quietly shaped me while it was happening.
We were lucky to be guided by the team at Action Matakana, Ash, Sam, and Alan, who welcomed us with warmth and care. The activities they planned didn’t just challenge us physically; they showed us that while we can feel scared, anxious, or unsure, we are also strong, capable, and supportive of one another.
Beyond the activities, it was the connection, shared vulnerability, and responsibility we carried for each other that made camp unforgettable. When we all left, we immediately texted each other. None of us could bear the silence after three days of constant conversation, sitting on random paddocks and talking about our different lives. It was special. Very special.
A big thanks also goes to Mr PT, who organised everything for us, as well as the other staff who supported us and took time out of their day to come, talk, and share their wisdom. Their guidance made the experience even more impactful.
We return to school leading differently now, more grounded, aware, and committed to supporting those around us. Manukura Camp didn’t just strengthen our team, it strengthened our understanding of what true leadership takes.
