721 runners and walkers raise funds for college fitness centre upgrade
Orewa Beach was buzzing with energy on Saturday 13 December as 721 people took part in the first-ever Bayleys Orewa Beach Fun Run, raising funds to upgrade the Orewa College fitness centre.
The event, organised by alumni and friends of the kura, offered 2.5km and 5km options for walkers, runners and families. Timed with low tide for easier running, the course attracted a mix of rangatahi, whānau with strollers, and seasoned runners, all enjoying the sunshine.
The 5km was won by Alex De Beer in 17 minutes and 41 seconds, while the 2.5km winner, known as "The Adam," clocked in at 9 minutes and 38 seconds. Every participant received a finisher's medal, a highlight for many, enhancing the sense of achievement.
The run was kept simple but effective, thanks to the experience of event management Quantum Events. Event coordinator Tash Rice said it was powerful to see so many people come together: “You can see the real community spirit and involvement,” she said. “It was great to see families and young people of all ages getting out there, enjoying the fresh air and getting off their screens. You will definitely see this event back in 2026.” Beyond fundraising, the goal was to promote youth wellness and encourage active lifestyles among our tamariki and rangatahi.
Sponsors included Bayleys Real Estate, More FM, Sunflour Cafe, CDS and Cranfield Automotives, with valuable support from the Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club, Mel Mayes Photography, and many other local businesses and volunteers.
Funds raised will go directly towards improvements to the kura fitness centre, helping provide better training spaces for ākonga.
Plans are already in motion to host the event again in 2026, potentially adding a 10km option to increase participation further. Organisers hope to build on this success and make it an even bigger fundraiser for the kura and and even bigger celebration of community wellbeing.
