Japanese Language Students Dive Into Culture, Comedy, and Cuisine

Year 12 and 13 students explore Japanese food, storytelling, and shopping on a trip to Auckland City.

On Thursday 24 July, the Year 12 and 13 Japanese students spent a fun-filled day exploring Japanese culture in Auckland City.

The day began with a Rakugo performance by Eishi Kanariya, who is widely known as New Zealand’s only Rakugo storyteller. His traditional comic storytelling had the room laughing as students experienced this unique part of Japanese culture.

Afterwards, the group enjoyed an authentic Japanese lunch at a restaurant near Britomart, with dishes like Ramen and Abura-soba on the menu.

The final stop took them to Japan Mart and Daiso, where students browsed shelves of Japanese goods, from snacks and stationery to souvenirs and had the chance to practise their language skills in a real-world setting.

It was a memorable day that brought Japanese learning to life outside the classroom.
