Tawharanui Camp Kicks Off Duke of Ed Bronze Journey

Outdoor Education in Action at Tawharanui

Orewa College has launched the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award journey for 52 students with an overnight camp at Tawharanui Open Sanctuary, north of Auckland.

This first step in the Bronze Award programme involved:

  • A full-day hike with tramping packs

  • Navigation and map-reading practice

  • Observing native plants and animals

  • Preparing for weather and outdoor conditions

  • Camping overnight in a conservation area

Students also took part in a twilight walk using red lights to avoid disturbing wildlife. Some groups were lucky enough to spot a kiwi feeding in the open grass—a memorable highlight for all involved.

A presentation from Tawharanui Open Sanctuary Society Incorporated (TOSSI) helped deepen students’ awareness of local conservation efforts and environmental protection.

Throughout the experience, students developed key life skills including independence, resilience, and teamwork. Many also formed new friendships or strengthened existing ones, gaining a greater appreciation for the taiao (natural world).

A huge thank you to Mr Waddell, Mrs Wilding, Ms Hogg, Mrs Holmes, and Ms Ferguson for leading this valuable haerenga.

Ka pai, team! This is just the beginning of the adventure.
