Pōwhiri for New Students of Orewa College in 2025

Orewa College warmly welcomes new students and their whānau with a special pōwhiri, marking the beginning of their journey. Learn more about this important tradition and what to expect on your first day.

Nau mai, haere mai! Welcome to Orewa College.

Today, we open our doors to over 450+ new ākonga (students) and their whānau (families). A special pōwhiri (Māori welcome ceremony) is held to honour this important milestone, marking the beginning of their journey with us. Click here to see our pōwhiri video on YouTube.

What is a Pōwhiri?

A pōwhiri is a traditional Māori welcome ceremony that fosters connection between the manuhiri (visitors) to the tangata whenua (people), so that visitors and people are joined as one.
It involves:

  • Karanga (Call to Welcome): The host group formally calls visitors onto the school grounds.

  • Whaikōrero (Speeches): Speeches of welcome from both Orewa College and whānau representatives.

  • Waiata (Songs): A show of unity and support from both sides.

  • Hongi (Pressing of Noses): A traditional greeting symbolising the sharing of breath and life.

  • Kai (Food): A shared meal to finalise the welcome and bring people together.

What This Means for New Students

Starting a new school can be exciting and overwhelming, but at Orewa College, we make sure every student feels welcomed and supported. This pōwhiri is the first step in fostering a sense of belonging and community.

"The pōwhiri is more than a ceremony; it's the beginning of a journey. It connects students to the people make Orewa College special. A pōwhiri at this level boosts the mana of Te Ao Maori for the whole school." says Wiri Warriner, Principal.

To our new students, this is your place to grow, learn, and connect. You are now part of our whānau, and we look forward to seeing you thrive.
