At Orewa College, our Envirogroup is a student-led team working to care for our local environment and grow a culture of sustainability across the kura.
About Envirogroup
Guided by kaitiakitanga, the group brings together students from across all year levels who want to make a real, practical difference for the places we share with our community. Envirogroup is for students who care about the environment, sustainability, and looking after our coastal home. Members work together on hands-on projects, learn alongside local experts and organisations, and lead environmental action both within the school and across the wider Hibiscus Coast.
The group is part of the Enviroschools kaupapa, a programme that supports schools to learn, plan, and take action together for a more sustainable future.
What we do
- Plant native species and support local restoration and biodiversity projects
- Care for the school grounds and promote sustainable, everyday habits
- Partner with community organisations such as Restore Hibiscus and Bays
- Lead and take part in environmental events, workshops, and conferences
- Raise awareness of sustainability and kaitiakitanga across the school
Our projects
Our students take part in meaningful mahi throughout the year. A recent example is our planting day at the Orewa Estuary alongside Restore Hibiscus and Bays, where fifty-six students from Year 7 to Year 13 planted 406 native plants generously donated by Glasgow Contractors. Envirogroup members also lead and contribute to events such as the student-led Rangatahi Sustainability and Regeneration Conference.
