Orewa College Year 12 Physics students took their learning to the next level at Game Over Auckland, using go-kart racing to explore real-world science concepts like force, acceleration, and momentum.
Accelerating Our Learning – Literally!
On Monday 7 April, our Year 12 Physics students took their learning out of the classroom and onto the racetrack at Game Over Auckland. While racing high-speed electric go-karts was a thrill, the real excitement was seeing the physics they’ve studied in action.
From the moment they arrived, students were gathering data and applying key physics concepts like centripetal force, friction, momentum, and acceleration — all while navigating tight corners and fast straights. “It’s one thing to read about forces in a textbook, but experiencing them while racing brought a whole new level of understanding,” said student Johane Steyn.
The group also spoke with a Game Over mechanic about how safety features in the karts are designed with physics in mind, offering valuable insights into real-world applications of science and engineering.
Beyond the learning, it was a great chance to build friendships and enjoy a shared experience. “We’re grateful to our teachers for organising this experience. It helped us see how physics applies to everyday things — even go-karting!”
It was a day filled with discovery, teamwork, and speed — a perfect mix of ako and adventure.
