Careers Department
Welcome to our Careers Hub. Our team are all passionate about helping our students to make informed choices about their ‘next steps’ after their years at Orewa College.

Our aim is to help every student transition successfully from school into the world of work and/or training.

We oversee many programmes for students which aid this transition and we encourage our students to be proactive about looking beyond school and taking full advantage of what is on offer to help them prepare for that time.

As a first step for students we recommend they look at careers.govt.nz. This is a very comprehensive website with starting points for those students who have no idea of where they are heading. It provides more specific information about an occupation; job prospects, pay, how to get into the job, the subjects that might by required and what the job is like.

We endeavour to have a Career Conversation with every Year 12 & 13 student and encourage them to come in to make a time for a chat with one of us about their future possibilities. Parents/caregivers are welcome to join their student. While we hope to get to every year group form class to discuss options, give information and create opportunities for exploration, all students are welcome to pop into the Careers Hub at a Morning Tea for guidance & assistance with course selection. STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource)

The STAR programme is designed to help Year 11 - 13 students move smoothly from school into tertiary study or work. STAR Course can be a good option if you're thinking of leaving school early, as you may be able to pick up skills that will help you into a job or further study later on.

Gateway

The purpose of Gateway is to provide senior students (Years 12 & 13) with opportunities to access structured workplace learning.   Students attend offsite placements and gain knowledge and skills related to their placement industry.

Students need to apply to be a Gateway student.   An Application form will be available during Course Selection in Term 3.



Police Pathway Programme

This level 3 course is suitable for students who are looking to join the NZ Police, Fire & Emergency, the NZ Defence Force or work in the Justice System.   Click here for more information.

Step Ahead

Step Ahead is a Level 2 course designed for students who wish to enter the workforce through an apprenticeship, cadetship or a Youth Guarantee course.   Step Ahead Semester Courses are open to students in Year 12 and 13.   More information is available in the Senior Course booklet.   Click here for more information.


First Step

As a first step for students we recommend www.careers.govt.nz.   This is a very comprehensive website with starting points for both students who have no idea of where they are heading and those students who need more specific information about an occupation; job prospects, pay, how to get into the job, the subjects that might be required and what the job is like.   It contains useful tips on creating CVs and opening letters.

We also have templates for CV's in the Careers Google Classroom for students.

Career days are organised for college students of Maori and Pacific ethnicities in the Auckland area. We actively encourage our Maori and Pasifika students to make use of these opportunities by emailing them directly. It will mostly be one Year group per term.

PILOT (Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow) for Pasifika students

The PILOT days focus on year level appropriate themes with the ultimate aim to enhance career planning, educational and leadership potential of students. It is also an opportunity to familiarise students with university liaison staff and other tertiary providers who mentor and guide Pasifika students.



​OCE (On Campus Experience)

A fully funded scholarship for Year 13 Māori students to experience living and learning at Otago University.  

Held twice a year, it provides an amazing opportunity for students of Maori descent to experience learning at the University of Otago, meeting staff, attending lectures, exploring the campus and Dunedin city. Flights, accommodation in a residential college, meals, are all covered in the scholarship.

​POCE Pacific on Campus Experience

A fully funded scholarship for Year 13 Pasifika students to experience living and learning at Otago University takes place in May and is run in conjunction with the Dunedin Tertiary Open Day.

Open Days and Information Evenings

These happen throughout the year at Universities and other Tertiary Institutes. These Open Days provide students with an opportunity to visit the campuses, listen to presentations on what they have to offer.
