Term One Recap of Outdoor Education and EOTC at Orewa College

Discover how Orewa College students thrive through Outdoor Education and EOTC experiences. Surfing, kayaking, and ocean safety lessons empower students to build confidence, teamwork, and resilience.

Term One in Outdoor Education

Term One has been a powerful start for our Outdoor Education programme, with students embracing Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) to learn in real-time, real-world environments. Using our unique local coastline as the ultimate learning ground, students across multiple year levels have developed practical skills and personal growth through water-based activities.

Highlights from Term One

  • Level 3 Outdoor Education students dove into surfing, developing balance, resilience, and confidence while learning in dynamic ocean conditions.

  • Level 2 students took part in kayaking and ocean safety training — navigating moving water, making decisions under pressure, and working effectively as a team.

  • Year 10 Outdoor Pathways students explored tides, currents, marine wildlife, and environmental care — growing their understanding of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and water safety.

“It’s awesome seeing students step out of their comfort zones,” says Outdoor Education teacher, Joel Dickinson. “They come away with more than just skills — they come away with self-belief and connection to the moana.”

Orewa College is proud to offer EOTC experiences that reflect the beauty and strength of our environment. Whether in the estuary or out past the breakers, ako (learning) happens on every wave.

We can’t wait to see where Term Two takes us. More waves, more growth, and more unforgettable lessons!
