Zero Waste Zone Trip - By Aston Sadgrove Year 8

Recently Year 8 classes visited the Zero Waste Zone at Waitakere Recycling Centre. The first half of our trip was with Tori, a Waste Wise Coordinator from Auckland Council. She took us on a bus tour of the recycling and refuse facility. This is where the different types of waste are deposited. The tipping station, where the rubbish trucks dump the landfill waste, was an eye opener. Seeing the huge volume of waste being trucked in every few minutes helped us to understand part of the problem. In the second half of the trip, we examined the tiger worms doing their amazing jobs in the worm farms. We also had a valuable session with Kendall, a teacher at the Zero Waste Zone, and looked at different types of waste and their more sustainable alternatives. We talked about what we, as consumers, could do to be sustainable. Overall, the trip was amazing. Click here for a quick guide on how to make easy changes to live more sustainably.
