On Friday 8 March 8ODL and 8GBS participated in a rubbish audit with Tori Christie, a sustainable school advisor from Auckland Council. The waste audit involved students weighing all the rubbish that Orewa College produced in just one day. They then sorted it into different categories such as recyclables, paper, food waste, etc.
The results were quite compelling. We soon realised only a small amount of the schools rubbish was being taken to the right places. The total waste weighed in at just over 118kg. The actual waste that needed to go to the landfill was just 17kg.
The students are now looking into ways of how we can reduce the waste going into the landfill. This will save the school thousands of dollars each year, as well as saving the planet.
