Members of the Orewa College Jazz Band spent the weekend of 5 - 6 April in Tauranga performing at the National Youth Jazz Festival. On arrival in Tauranga, students and staff were stunned by a concert involving the SUMO jazz combo from Christchurch made up of professional jazz musicians who also acted as judges in the competition. It was an inspiring evening for our young musicians.
On Saturday, we listened to a few jazz bands from colleges around the country and finally it was our turn to perform. Our programme included the test piece for the competition “Timeline”, “Morocco” a fusion/funk number, the ballad “When I fall in Love” and ended with the classic, “Birdland”. Miss Hart and the musicians did a brilliant job and afterwards had the benefit of some expert tips from Dr Rodger Fox in a workshop session.
The competition culminated in a prize giving at the end of the day and the Orewa College Jazz band was awarded a silver for their performance. It was a short, but fun-filled, action packed trip which has left us inspired and ready to get to work on our KBB programme later this year. Congratulations on the Silver Award.
