Waterpolo

Water Polo is a great team sport that builds water and ball skills and fitness. We have a number of boys and girls teams of all abilities.

Coaches

Provisional coaches for 2020 will be Marcia and Michael Noda. Marci and Mike have started in waterpolo only recently but have quickly grown to love the sport over the last year. Both Mike and Marci have coached numerous sporting teams for netball, rugby, Orewa Surf Club, Flippa ball and now waterpolo as well. Marci and Mike will be supported throughout the year by student coaches – we are lucky to have some passionate players Yr9 – Yr13 willing to encourage our younger players.

Manager

Marci is our fantastic Manager, and she will continue to make sure everyone is kept in the loop over the year via emails and the Orewa College Waterpolo Facebook page.

Training

Training sessions for waterpolo have been notoriously difficult to arrange due to pool availability. Hibiscus Coast Waterpolo Club has been kind in making Thursday evenings available (TBC) at Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre in Term 1. We will assess this each term depending upon pool availability and timing. Hibiscus Coast Waterpolo Club will also be assisting with coaching/training sessions at Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre from time to time.

By entering team/s into the North Harbour Intermediate League, we also get training sessions provided by North Harbour Coaches. Training in term 1 is likely to be a Friday night.

AIMS Tournament and North Island Champs Tournaments have been run as competitive (rather than participatory tournaments)

Tournament Fees

Tournament costs vary, but it costs Orewa College between $550 - $1,000 per team to enter tournaments, depending on the tournament! We divide this up amongst the children who would like to play. We do fundraise wherever possible. As a ballpark, it is best to assume approximately $90 per tournament for entry fee.

AIMS costs are higher due to the accommodation and extra costs associated with being away for several days. This year the approximate cost per child selected to play in the AIMS team was $500.

Uniforms

Players are expected to wear the regulation Water Polo uniform during tournaments. Uniforms can be purchased second-hand, or new if we are able to order more than 5 at a time. Plain black togs may be worn if a player does not yet have the regulation uniform.

An update on uniform costs will be provided early in the school year.
